So let's talk fantasy casting: specifically, for Bram Stoker's Dracula. I know that Francis Ford Coppola interpreted Dracula in his own engaging way back in the 90's and, while I appreciate and enjoy his film (as gratuitous and tweaked as it is), I don't agree with all of his casting choices. Check out the picspam below to see which actors I kept and which I re-cast.

I should note as well that many of the actors I selected are no longer of the appropriate age for the relevant part: but this is Fantasy Casting, which means I don't have to worry about such pesky things as Real Life Age, right? Let's imagine this movie is filmed by a production company based out of Dr. Frankenstein's small Eastern European village a la Mary Shelley's Frankenholes! Neither time nor space are an issue!

I tried to choose images of the actors that showcased them at the appropriate age, anyway; apart from Quincey Morris, whose actor required at least one iconic image of his current age.

Warning: Some nudity of the topless variety in the picspam below.

Enough nattering: behold!

01. Gary Oldman as Count Dracula

02. Jude Law as Jonathan Harker

03. Natalie Dormer as Wilhelmina "Mina" Harker (née Murray)

04. Karen Gillan as Lucy Westenra

05. Colin Firth as the Hon. Arthur Holmwood (Lord Godalming)

06. Sam Elliott as Quincey Morris

07. James Frain as Dr. John Seward

08. Sir Ben Kingsley as Renfield

09. Sir Anthony Hopkins as Professor Abraham Van Helsing

10. Monica Bellucci, Elena Anaya, and Isabelle Adjani
as The Brides of Dracula

Other than keeping Sadie Frost (because I LOVED her as Lucy), I agree with all of your choices. :)

It's true Sadie Frost was pretty awesome... but I felt that the character should have been possessed of more innocence in the beginning to make her seduction and transformation by Dracula even more marked.

(Of course, that's probably more the fault of the direction than inherent in the actor.)

Yeah, I agree with you there. But, also, yeah, I'm gonna blame the director, not Frost.

Oh, I like this. I rather liked a lot of that film - in my world, vampires don't sparkle, ever - and I think the time is right for another version of the classic, done completely straight. The BBC thing the other years started well, but went distinctly Hammer meets Greenaway.

(Karen Gillan with fangs - I can hear the fanfic engines grinding into life even now...)

I quite agree: sparkling vampires are unvarnished bullshit.

I really think Coppola's film is the closest we're going to get to a faithful portrayal of Stoker's work. I'd love for someone to prove me wrong...

(Ha! I know, right?)

I've just been re-reading my original due to this, and oddly enough, I can see Natalie D as Lucy rather than Mina, now.

You know, on reflection, I can also see that. Speaking of re-reading, I think I'm going to do that this Fall.
